Vincent Van Gogh’s painting, ‘The Potato Eaters’ inspired my painting of, "There was an Englishman, Irishman & Scotsman" from my Old Men series. I love how the dim lit room creates the atmosphere of Van Gogh’s painting and so I tried using a similar method of lighting in my work, to create the atmosphere of the pub. I then decided to put the same three characters in different pub scenes, basically showing them enjoying themselves.

There was no reference material, the characters are out my head and hopefully I’ve captured their individual personalities, to create a happy painting and make the viewer smile. I believe that the mood and feeling within the painting are as important as the composition, to try and capture a moment.

I tend to lose myself in my work; I become completely absorbed and time flies by. A painting is only finished when I feel that I have achieved my personal goal of creating something that can evoke emotions, movement, laughter or a memory and hopefully this can have the same impact on the viewer.
